One on One Personal Trainer: What to Expect From Your First Assessment in 2026

Starting personal training can feel exciting, but it can also bring plenty of questions.

What happens at the first appointment? Will you have to complete difficult exercises? Do you need to know your current fitness level? What happens if you have an old injury or haven't trained for years?

A One on One Personal Trainer assessment should answer those questions before your training programme begins. More importantly, it should help your trainer understand where you're starting and what you actually want to achieve.

At Ideal Fitness, the first assessment looks beyond a single fitness goal. It considers your body composition, nutrition, physical fitness, health and medical history, and your individual needs. This information helps your trainer create a programme around you rather than asking you to fit into a standard routine.

Why does the first assessment matter?

Personal training works best when your programme reflects your starting point.

You might want to build strength, improve fitness, change your body composition, move more comfortably, or simply become more consistent. Your trainer needs to understand your goals before deciding how to structure your sessions.

That matters even more in 2026.

Ireland's current physical activity guidelines recommend that adults aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity. They also recommend muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week.

However, those are population-level recommendations. Your own starting point may look very different.

The HSE's 2026 Get Active programme recognises this too. Its 10-week programme starts inactive adults with just 10 minutes of walking three times weekly, then gradually builds activity.

A One on One Personal Trainer can use the same principle of gradual progression while creating a plan around your individual circumstances.

What happens during your first assessment?

1. You'll discuss your goals

Your assessment should begin with a conversation, not a workout.

Your trainer needs to know what you're hoping to achieve and why it matters to you. You may have a specific target, or you may simply want to feel fitter and stronger.

You can also discuss your previous exercise experience, current routine, and any challenges that make exercise difficult.

There is no need to arrive with everything figured out. That's part of what your trainer is there to help with.

2. Your health and medical history are considered

Your health history provides important context for your training.

At Ideal Fitness, the assessment includes health and medical history alongside the physical and fitness assessments.

This gives your trainer a clearer picture of your circumstances before building your programme.

If you have an existing medical condition, injury or other concern, be open about it. Your trainer can then consider appropriate modifications and advise when additional professional medical guidance may be needed.

3. You'll complete a physical assessment

A One on One Personal Trainer assessment isn't about proving how fit you are.

Instead, it helps establish a useful starting point.

Ideal Fitness includes a physical assessment and body composition measurements within its first assessment process.

Your trainer can use this information to understand your current position and establish measurable points for future progress.

That makes future training more meaningful. Rather than simply asking whether you feel fitter, you can look at changes over time.

4. Your fitness level is assessed

Your fitness assessment helps your trainer understand what you can comfortably manage now.

You don't need to worry if you're returning to exercise after a long break. Starting at the right level is more useful than trying to impress your trainer during your first session.

Your programme can then progress as your fitness develops.

This approach also fits with Ireland's wider public-health focus on helping people become more active through realistic, sustainable steps. The National Physical Activity Framework aims to create more opportunities for people to be active in ways that suit their everyday lives and individual circumstances.

Nutrition can be part of the conversation

Exercise is only one part of your routine.

Ideal Fitness includes a nutritional assessment as part of its initial assessment.

That doesn't mean you need to follow an extreme diet.

Instead, discussing your current eating habits can help your trainer understand the bigger picture. Your nutrition approach should make sense for your lifestyle, preferences and goals.

Ideal Fitness also offers nutrition coaching as one of its wider training services, giving you an option to address this area alongside your exercise programme.

Your programme should fit your life

One of the biggest benefits of individual training is flexibility.

Ideal Fitness provides training at home, outdoors and in office settings, depending on your chosen arrangement.

That can make consistency easier when travelling to a gym isn't convenient.

Ideal Fitness provides one-to-one personal training across areas including Abington, Castle Demesne, Castleknock, Celbridge, Clondalkin, Drumcondra, Dublin 15, Griffith Avenue, Lucan, Myra Manor, Streamstown, The Warren and Westmanstown.

So whether your routine is based around home, work or another suitable training environment, the goal is to make exercise practical.

What happens after the assessment?

Once your trainer understands your goals and starting point, they can build your individual training plan.

Ideal Fitness says its one-to-one service includes personalised workout and nutrition plans, fitness assessment and progress tracking, plus ongoing support from your trainer.

You can also choose from different training options and packages. The current Ideal Fitness site lists 60-minute one-to-one sessions, as well as two-to-one and small-group options. It also offers 3-, 6- and 10-session packages.

If you prefer additional support, services such as nutrition coaching, senior fitness training, sports conditioning and in-home yoga are also available.

The right combination depends on your needs. Your first assessment helps make that decision more informed.

What should you bring to your first assessment?

You don't need to prepare for the assessment like an exam.

Come ready to talk honestly about:

Your current activity level
Your previous training experience
Your goals
Your daily routine
Your eating habits
Any injuries or health considerations
What has made exercise difficult in the past

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

Most importantly, don't worry about being judged.

A good assessment is about understanding you, not comparing you with someone else.

Why individual training is increasingly relevant in 2026

More Irish adults are taking part in sport and exercise.

Sport Ireland's Irish Sports Monitor 2025, published in May 2026, found that more than 2.12 million people were participating in sport weekly. Personal exercise was the most popular sporting activity, with one in five people taking part each week.

That doesn't mean everyone needs the same workout.

In fact, it highlights why personalised guidance can be useful. People have different schedules, abilities, preferences and starting points.

A One on One Personal Trainer gives you dedicated time to work on your own goals while adjusting your programme as you progress.
